Une citation à retenir

En lisant un article de Zero Hedge portant sur le fait que certains états américains à tendance socialiste sont désertés par des citoyens plus vaillants alors que d’autres économiquement défavorisés, attirés par les bénéfices sociaux, y déménagent, j’ai remarqué la citation suivante, qui est attribuée à un pasteur américain, le docteur Adrian Rogers :

“You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.”

En fouillant le Web pour copier la citation, afin de la reprendre dans mon blog, j’ai découvert quelques faits intéressants, à savoir que celle-ci ne date pas de 1931 et qu’Adrian Rogers n’en est pas l’auteur.

En fait, c’est dans un sermon prononcé en 1984 que le pasteur a repris de manière presque entièrement ad verbatim des paroles prononcées par un membre du Congrès américain, Bruce Alger, en 1958. Ces paroles ont par la suite été répétées dans divers médias au cours des années 1960. Alger lui-même reprenait des mots écrits par Gerald L.K. Smith dans un magazine nommé « The Cross and the Flag ». Vous trouverez des détails à ce sujet ici.

La citation est donc mal attribuée, mais cela ne change rien au fait qu’elle est criante de vérité.
